Global Pop Group BTS Helps Create an Unforgettable Night for Five Young Cancer Fighters

ARLINGTON, Texas — On August 15, five young cancer fighters and their families gathered at AT&T Stadium for the sold-out BTS concert, sharing an evening that offered something that can become surprisingly rare during childhood cancer treatment: time to simply be together. Through a generous partnership between Heroes for Children and UnitedHealthcare, the families experienced the concert from a VIP suite, surrounded by music, excitement and the people they love.

For a few hours, there were no treatment schedules, hospital visits or difficult conversations. There was laughter, singing, cheering and the opportunity to create a memory together.

For children facing cancer, experiences like these are about more than entertainment. They provide a chance to step outside the routines and realities of treatment and experience something that feels normal, joyful and entirely their own. A social experience cannot change a diagnosis or erase the difficult days, but it can remind a child and their family that cancer is only one part of their story.

Among the five young cancer fighters in attendance was Olivya, who has been battling cancer for more than a year. For her and her family, the evening quickly became something far beyond a night at a concert. During the performance, BTS member Jimin (Park Ji-min) came off the stage and approached Olivya. He hugged her, kissed her and gave her a gift—an unexpected and deeply meaningful moment for a young girl who has spent much of the past year navigating the realities of cancer treatment.

They laughed. They sang. They cheered. They made memories.

“Olivya was so excited, and she still can’t believe that Jimin hugged her, gave her a kiss, and even gave her a gift! She is so inspiring and encouraging. She never lets herself feel different or self-conscious because she has no hair. You can see that in her smile. No words could ever express how grateful I am,” said Olivya’s mom.

Jenny Lawson, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Heroes for Children, said the moment captured why creating opportunities for joy is such an important part of supporting families through childhood cancer.

“I cannot thank BTS, Jimin, and UnitedHealthcare enough for making this incredible moment possible for Olivya. For a child who has faced some incredibly difficult moments, Jimin gave Olivya a moment filled with joy, love, and pure happiness. It is a memory she and her family will carry with them forever.”

While Olivya's interaction with Jimin became the defining moment of the evening, she was one of five young cancer fighters who shared the experience. Together, the families laughed, cheered and enjoyed the concert, creating memories that were centered not on cancer, but on one another.

Olivya's social worker reflected on the importance of experiences that bring joy and connection to families navigating childhood cancer:

“These moments remind me that the cancer experience can also bring moments of joy, a sense of connectedness, and an opportunity to use the journey to bring healing and awareness of how we are all in this together.”

The concert did not erase what these families have experienced, but it gave them something important to carry alongside the difficult days: a night filled with joy, connection and memories that will last long after the music ended.

When a Moment Becomes a Movement

What happened between Jimin and Olivya quickly reached far beyond AT&T Stadium. In less than 24 hours, the moment was viewed more than 5 million times across Heroes for Children's social media platforms, introducing millions of people to Olivya and, unexpectedly, to the work of Heroes for Children.

The response from BTS ARMY was immediate. Fans shared Olivya's story, sent messages of encouragement and began learning about the children and families supported by Heroes for Children. What began as a personal moment between a young cancer fighter and a global music star became an opportunity to connect a worldwide community with families facing childhood cancer across Texas.

That response matters because childhood cancer affects far more than a child's health. It can disrupt a family's finances, employment, routines and sense of normalcy, while children can miss school, friendships and the everyday experiences that make childhood special.

Heroes for Children works to support families through these challenges with Financial Assistance, Social Experiences, and Comfort & Care. A concert may last only a few hours, but for a family living through cancer, that experience can become a lasting memory—a chance to laugh together, reconnect and remember that there is still room for joy in the middle of a difficult journey.

Turning One Moment Into Lasting Impact

Inspired by the extraordinary response to Olivya's story, Heroes for Children has launched a special $50,000 fundraising campaign to help create more meaningful experiences for children and families facing childhood cancer across Texas.

The goal is to turn the generosity surrounding one unforgettable evening into support for more families who need it. There are more children who deserve time away from the hospital, more parents who deserve to see their child experience uncomplicated joy, and more families who deserve opportunities to create memories that are about who they are—not simply what they are going through.

The response to Olivya's story has shown what can happen when a single moment of kindness reaches the right people. What began with one child's smile has become an opportunity to bring hope and joy to many more.

To BTS ARMY: Thank You.

You saw Olivya. You celebrated her. You shared her story. And you showed up.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about a child you may never meet and families whose experiences may be completely different from your own. Your response has transformed an unforgettable moment into an opportunity to make a meaningful difference for children across Texas.

Now, together, we can turn one special night into many more.

Help Heroes for Children reach our $50,000 goal and create more moments of joy for children and families facing childhood cancer.
