Just one month ago, we received a call that would change everything. Jason Aldean’s team reached out with incredible news: our organization had been recommended for support. The reason? A local Houston teen, Devarje Williams, had reached out to Jason Aldean directly, seeking help to raise funds for children battling cancer. Devarje and his father, Theodis, chose Heroes for Children to receive those funds—a decision rooted in a story of resilience, courage, and hope.

Houston remembers the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Devarje’s family lost their home and, on top of that, faced the unimaginable challenge of Devarje’s cancer diagnosis. During their darkest days, Heroes for Children stepped in, providing emergency support to families impacted by the storm. Our funds ensured they would not face eviction from the apartment they relocated to after losing their home. Nearly eight years later, Devarje and Theodis remembered us as the first organization to stand with them—and that memory paved the way for a day we will never forget.

On Friday, August 15th, in partnership with Jason Aldean, Patriot Mobile, and the Houston Astros, we hosted the My Kind of Hero family event at Puttshack, a local indoor putt-putt venue. The day was overflowing with joy. Families, children, and volunteers had the chance to meet Jason Aldean and Astros legends Jeff Bagwell and Roger Clemens. After the meet-and-greet, the families enjoyed lunch and even got one-on-one putting time with the stars.

The highlight of the day was the announcement of an incredible gift: $200,000 from Jason Aldean and Patriot Mobile, with the Astros Foundation adding an additional $5,000. These funds will provide critical financial support for families battling childhood cancer—ensuring they can focus on their children, not the financial stress that so often accompanies a cancer diagnosis.

The celebration didn’t end there. Heroes for Children families then attended batting practice at Daikin Park before the big Astros game, while Devarje, Theodis, and our staff and co-founders, Larissa Linton and Jenny Lawson, joined Jason Aldean at his concert later that night in The Woodlands. Halfway through the show, they were invited on stage. Jason shared Devarje’s story and the impact of Heroes for Children, moving the crowd and inspiring attendees to contribute through a QR code displayed on screen. Since that night, fans have donated more than $5,000 additional dollars to support our mission.

This was more than an event—it was a moment of hope, gratitude, and celebration. A reminder that the community can come together to lift families up, inspire courage, and create lasting memories. Heroes for Children is profoundly grateful to Jason Aldean, Patriot Mobile, the Houston Astros, and everyone who made this day possible.

Together, we can ensure that no family with a child battling cancer will ever fight alone.
